Menopause

(Above: Menopause. Embellished and hand stitched. 21" x 17", framed. Click on image to enlarge.)

Last February I thought up this piece. It's been waiting. Two days ago the time seemed right to put it altogether. The background is a piece of embellished felt, cotton batting, cheesecloth, and bridal tulle. I had planned to stitch the words in red but the color was already there for me in the strings I'd never noticed. In two weeks I'll turn fifty. I don't feel old. I don't think old. Yet, there's no way to escape the fact that a half a century has passed since my birth. I'm stunned that this sign of aging crept up on me too!

Well....I'm very thankful to Aussie Jo. I love her suggestions and will called the wrapped and nailed "figure" Aegis. It is a perfect name....just the idea I wanted! Well....enough of this "conceptualism" for a while. I've got another bolt of Wonder Under and my "faux stained glass" pieces are underway again!

Yikes that 50 thing was scary - Glad I'm past that ;) I did go back to look at the memorial day post of your grave rubbing pieces and think they would be great in the ABAD exhibition!

Oddly enough just yesterday I cleaned out the drawer where I had kept all my 'supplies' and found three boxes of tampons. Wondered what I should do with them now I don't need them. Maybe I should send them to you? ;)

I'm not totally "there" yet (that means 50 or in menopause) but I am surely in the home stretch here. You should probably mass produce this piece. HA!

Powerful, and actually sort of sweet, too -- which surprises me a little. I love it. NOW, what are you going to do about hot flashes?

Love it! Think it'll do well in the waitingroom of the gynaecologist LOL

Wonderful, but I don't miss it at all. A very good present idea for a (girl)friend in the menopauze.
Thanks

It made me smile when I saw it, it's a great way to recycle your leftovers.

PS I am the culprit who posted a link to this quilt to a dutch mailinglist, hence all the dutch visitors.

It's a lovely idee. I' am happy that I have don with my period for many years. I was 42 when it stopped, but therefor I had 3 weeks my period and 1 week not. So it was enough.

Hi, I'm over 50 and happy to feel quite well in the menopause. I don't miss tampons at all ;-)
Your quilt made me smile too, wondering how it will look hanging above the sofa in a living room...
The same thing happened when I spotted a quilt made with preservatives some years ago in Sainte Marie aux Mines (see http://picasaweb.google.be/sommeke2002/SainteMarieAuxMines2007#5111001178978763250 and next)

Ahhh...great artists create alike! A few years ago, I stitched estrogen patches on a quilt.

Remember, the new middle age is 60!!!

Very remarkble quilt with humor. Well done.
Good luck with your work from the Netherlands,
