New Work and Last Words Reception

(Above: In Box CLX, detail.  Click on any image in this blog post for an enlargement.)

What's new?  Well, I'm slightly behind in my blogging but determined to catch up today!  This situation, however, has very, very good reasons.  First, I'm been BUSY!  Second, Steve and I decided at the last minute to drive up to Washington, DC for Fourth of July fireworks and a day on the National Mall at the Folklife Festival.  This will be the first of three blog entries ... which will put me up-to-date!

This post will include plenty of images taken last Thursday evening at the opening of my solo show, Last Words, at the Tapps Art Center.  It was a wonderful evening.  I love watching people look at my art.  What really captures their attention?  Is the concept effectively communicated? Do people even like it?

First, however, are three new pieces in my "In Box" series.

(Above: In Box CLXI. Inventory # 3189. Framed: 21 1/2" x 17 1/2". $325.)

Two are "medium" sized.  One is large.  I also snapped a few detail photos ... still learning the new camera ... and absolutely loving its macro lens capabilities!

I've never before been able to capture images with this much textural detail!

Since several people wrote to me and said they don't mind listed prices (and not one person wrote saying they didn't like it), I'm posting this information.  Believe it or not, someone earlier this week purchased one of my pieces using the "sales blog" for this work!  He's from Houston.  He bought the work for his mother's birthday.  She's in Dallas.  We shipped! EXCITING!

So ... the rest of this blog post includes the photos I took during the reception for Last Words.  Enjoy and please check back ... I'll be blogging about our whirlwind trip to Washington, DC later today!

(Above:  Love the fact that so many young people enjoyed the show.)

(Venetia Sharpe took this photo of me talking to three sisters.  By the way, Venetia's husband John Sharpe fabricated the unique coat hanger stitched into the vintage sleeping gown on the right.)

(Above:  I absolutely love this photo of a friend contemplating the epitaph banners.)

(Above:  It did rain during the evening but that didn't seem to thin the crowds!)

(Above:  Examining The Bat in the Box.  Most people liked this piece!  Awesome!)

Although I've written three other blog posts this week, I'm linking this one to Nina-Marie's "Off the Wall Fridays", a site for sharing fiber art.

"Cemetery" -- the size and scope of it -- amazing. Congratulations on a wonderful exhibit!

Thanks for sharing these photos, and congrats on your recent sale! I am curious about what is along the baseboards in the photos of your exhibit. Is this artwork that you made? I'd like to see more of it!

Susan: I am such a fan of your work! Your solo show is just stunning...and there is so much art of yours that I have not ever seen. Is the Cemetery quilt yours as well? That is just an incredible piece. Thanks for sharing all this. Can't wait to catch up with your next couple posts.
